Etsy Shop Updates

It’s been a busy couple of months with summer camping, getting my son back into the swing of high school and dyeing yarn, lots of it!  I want to let you know of a few new colorways that I’ve recently added my Etsy store.

The first two are my first Halloween colorways as you might’ve been able to tell from the names.  Hobgoblin will create skinny stripes if knit in the round for socks.  Witches Brew is a variegated yarn.

Do you enjoy uniquely bold hand dyed yarns? Opulence and Fall Splendor fit meet that description.  Opulence is a variegated yarn made from greens, golds and purples, a sign of royalty.  On the other hand, those are typical Mardi Gras colors.  The other yarn, Fall Splendor, is a beautifully saturated yarn blending golds, rusts, and greens that represent a beautiful autumn season in the great state of Michigan.

Join me at the Knitter’s Nest!!

I’m very excited to announce that I will be having a trunk show at The Knitter’s Nest in Clarkston, MI from Friday, August 2nd – Saturday, August 10th. This coincides with the I-75 Yarn Crawl. I will be present at the shop on Friday, August 2nd and Saturday, August 10th. The yarn will be there the entire week.

I will have my most popular colorways available such as Autumn Speckles, Cathedral, and Life’s A Beach.

Are you a local Sports fan? I have yarns for the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions, Detroit Red Wings and college team yarns for University of Michigan, Michigan State, Central Michigan and Ohio State.

I got started dyeing yarn in 2016 when my husband asked for wool fingerless gloves for hunting. After failed searches for a soft yarn, I learned how to dye yarn using Easter egg dye pellets. After seeing the color bubble up and color a bare skein of yarn, I knew I was HOOKED!

I moved into using professional acid dyes and began to make my popular Woodland Camo and Hunter’s Orange yarn. I began experimenting with speckling and other techniques.

I am a regular vendor at the Ann Arbor Fiber Expos in April and October. I love talking with customers about my passion and various projects they’ve made or plan to make. It’s very nice to see how they pair some of my yarn colors together that gets my creative juices flowing!

I would like for you to plan a trip to the Knitter’s Nest and say hi.

Announcing the Autumn Harvest Shawl

Hi knitters! I am SO happy to announce that I’ve published my Autumn Harvest Shawl pattern on Ravely.  It’s been a labor of love for two years but I’m sure you’ll understand that sometimes, life gets in the way.

It started out with a Craftsy class from Miram Felton and designing shawls.  I created my own pattern repeat and worked in the class to get the design working in a triangular shape shawl.  It was amazing to learn all the things to consider when designing a shawl and the process is different for each basic shawl shape.

Description

Do you feel the chill in the air? Wrap yourself in this lacy shawl as the weather cools down. Autumn Harvest is a symmetrical triangle shawl featuring a standard 3-stitch garter stitch edging and a unique design for the spine. Do you see leaves? Do you see arrows? Do you see shafts of wheat? What else do you see?

Materials

  • Size 5 US (3.75 mm) one 40” (102 cm) circular
  • Size 6 US (4.0 mm) 40” (102 cm) for a loose bind off edge
  • Tapestry needle
  • Splash of Color Yarns Platinum colorway Cranberry (463 yds/423m) – shawl shown in sample used 400 yds
  • Stitch markers (optional but very helpful to track your progress in the lace sections)
  • Blocking wires, optional but very helpful with the long edges.

Gauge
24 st per 4” (10 cm) in stockinette stitch

The pattern is written to use a single skein of fingering weight yarn but if you’d like a larger shawl, you’ll need two skeins. I’ve included a table in the pattern showing how many stitches you should have at the end of each pattern repeat. The pattern contains both charted and written instructions.

Want some great news? My pattern is on sale for 20% now through midnight EDT on May 19th!

Lots of squishy yarn headed to Fiber Expo

A mere two weeks away, I will be headed to Ann Arbor, MI for the 2019 Spring Fiber Expo with a Ford F-150 filled with lots and lots of squishy yarn!  This will be my 5th Fiber Expo at which I’ve been a vendor and it’s so much fun talking with customers about my passion for taking bare yarn and turning it into uniquely, bold hand-dyed yarns! I always wind up with new project ideas from customer suggestions and I usually find different ways to pair yarns together with those I’d not thought of before. Lots of creative energy is had by all!

The Fiber Expo is held at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds, 5055 Ann Arbor Saline Rd, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48103

  • Saturday 9:00am—5:00pm

Ok – so what is new for my booth this spring? I have seven new colorways for you to choose from:

I will also have a hard-copy print outs of my popular patterns from Ravelry.   The sock pattern shown below was designed by Phyll Lagerman named after and using my Dragonfly Dreams colorway. When you buy one of my patterns, I will ask for your Ravelry user name and then gift you an electronic copy for your library in case “your dog eats your pattern”.

If you can’t make it to the show, these yarns are available on my Etsy store here.  I would LOVE to see any projects you make from my yarns so tag me on Instagram (@splashofcoloryarns) or post them on my Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/splashofcoloryarns

Project ideas on Ravelry

Do you have a gradient set or set of mini skeins and you aren’t sure what to make from them?  Look no further than my Mini Skein Idea list!  I put the list together with my friend, Jean Story, from MidMitten Designs last fall when we created our 2018 Holiday Treats collaboration kit with a gorgeous project bag and coordinating mini skeins.  There are only three still available on my Etsy store as of the date of this blog post.

Another wonderful idea is to create one of these projects using the tiny leftovers we all have in our stash….little balls that remind us of each project that we made with them.  Why not combine those into a cowl?  It will be like a memory project everytime you wear it! 🙂

Being thankful….

I want to thank all my customers and businesses with whom I’ve worked this year.  It’s been a joy creating yarn that you love!  I find the times I can interact with you directly at fiber shows or trunk shows very inspiring.  I am amazed sometimes as my customers pair different colorways together for their projects that I wouldn’t have thought about.

This fall, my husband helped me move my yarn dyeing into the basement.  I got tired of having to clean up all my equipment and supplies in order to cook a meal!  Do you have one of those standard white hood range light/fan thing over your stove?  Well mine is no longer white! LOL  It’s rainbow colored. 🙂

Now I can keep my mess downstairs and it’s my own little “cave”.  I use a Google Home mini to play my favorite artists for dyeing — Boney James, Dave Koz, Euge Groove, etc.  Occassionally, there’s hard rock from the 80’s in there too.

Hopefully, you will find time to be with friends and family this weekend and find time to knit or crochet……Happy Thanksgiving.

End of summer clearance

I can’t believe the summer has gone by so fast!  I’ve been dyeing yarn for Apple Tree Lane in Clare, MI and had a trunk show last week at The Yarn Stop in Clawson, MI.

I have added some of my one of a kind skeins of fingering sock weight and worsted weight yarns to my Etsy store.  All my yarns are dyed in a pet-free and smoke-free home.Screen Shot 2018-09-01 at 10.07.46 AM

Sale Yarns added to Etsy Store

Happy New Year!  Welcome to 2018!

I’ve begun the process of looking back at my first year in business for lessons learned, what worked well, what do I want to do again, etc.  Part of that effort includes me sorting through my color ways to see what was most popular (and I should keep dyeing!) and others that were “test” yarns as I played with color combinations or a few skeins that I didn’t personally like how they turned out.

Soooo….To start out the new year, I’ve added them to my Etsy store at $18 per skein.  The sale yarns include fingering, DK and worsted weight yarns.

Cyber week sale ends December 1st

Have you started your online shopping?  Are you looking for just the perfect yarn for your favorite fiber enthusiast?  Or, if you’re honest, is that person you?!  As part of Cyber week, I’ve put my entire Etsy store on sale so everything is 20% off.  Plus, if you buy two or more skeins, you automatically get free shipping domestic shipping to the US.
